George Thatcher Lovell 1831

headstone

To the Memory of
GEORGE THATCHER LOVELL
aged 17 years 10 mo. & 21 days
Eldest Son of Cap. GEORGE LOVELL.
This youth in the midst of present
usefulness and future promise
was lost in the disastrous wreck of the
Schooner Warrior
of which he was mate on Block Island
April 9, 1831 where her Commander
Cap. OLIVER SCUDDER and every
person on board 16 in number perished.
The body whose remains lie beneath this stone
was washed on the Island from the wreck
there buried and hence transferred by
his bereaved Father to this spot
beside the grave of his Mother.

God moves in a mysterious way
his wonders to perform.
He plants his footsteps in the deep
and rides upon the storm.
