Codner Carvers

William Codner (1709 - 1769) of Boston learned from Nathaniel Emmes. Codner copied Emmes with early winged heads. Codner became a carver of life like winged heads or portrait stones which can be found in several Cape Cod old burying grounds. William's sons Abraham (? - 1750)and John (? - before 1783) also were stone carvers. Abraham was carving 'light bulb' style skulls in the 1770's. The following gravestones are typical of those produced by the Codner family. Literature sources confirm some of these attributions. Some typical 'light bulb' skulls are shown but they are not confirmed to be be carved by the Codners.
