Stevens Carvers

John Stevens (1646 - 1736) founded the Stevens stone carvers of Newport, R I. His son John Stevens II (1702 - 1778) also was a stone carver. John Stevens II often carved cherubs with round head and wings raised above the head. Another son William (1710 - 1794) also was a stone carver. William married Anne Bull whose brother John Bull of Newport was a stone carver who learned from the Stevens. Several later generations of Stevens including John Stevens 3d (1753 - 1817) were stone carvers. The stone carving shop still operates in Newport.

Other carvers copied the Stevens designs including John Bull of Middletown. Also, three generations of the Tingley family all named Samuel carved gravestones in Attleborough starting in the 1720's. Their style resembles the Stevens carvings especially oval heads with no hair surrounded by high wings. Some of the gravestones listed below probably were carved by John Bull or the Tingleys.
