footstone
JOHN FREEMAN

The headstone displays a grim winged skull. The stone is carved in the style of Nathaniel Emmes of Boston.

The age shown on the headstone is in question. A Freeman genealogy indicates that John Freeman was born about 1627 and died in 1719 at age 92.

The parents of John Freeman were Edmond Freeman and Bennett (Hodsoll) Freeman. John Freeman was married to Marcy (Prence) Freeman 1711. They had 11 children including Edmond Freeman 1718/9 who is buried at the foot of John and Marcy. Two infants, John who died about 1651 and Prence who died about 1666, might be buried in unmarked graves in Cove.

When the headstone was excavated in 2000, a rusty pipe and two wires were found near the bottom of the hole. The wires seemed firmly attached to something further below ground to the left. The wires and pipe were left in place when the stone was reset.

Headstone and footstone cleaned October 2004. Fiberglass backing removed October 2008. Headstone cleaned with D/2 and reset higher October 2008. The wires and pipe found earlier were not observed when the headstone was reset. Footstone cleaned November 2009.
