This is a special gravestone. The tympanum displays a wingless skull in profile, large hourglass, scythe, pick and shovel. Note the large gouged eye sockets and the large teeth. A large crack is carved in the skull. See Rebecca Howes (d1765) for another dramatic skull without wings. The Chatham Historical Society has received expert opinion that the Sears and Howes gravestones are carved in the style of Robert Fowle of Boston.
