Samuel Hinckley 1804

headstone headstone tympanum

To the memory of
who died Aug'st 24th 1804
Aged 77 years

Long did my native powers,
The dangerous ocean brave,
Protected by my God
At home I make my grave.

The trumpeting angel image was popular about 1800. Susanna Hinckley (1790), daughter of Samuel, has a very similar stone carved by the Lamsons of Boston. It has been reported that Samuel's stone was carved by Nathaniel Holmes of Barnstable who copied Susanna's Lamson stone.
