Elizabeth Sears 1764

headstone tympanum

Here lies buried ye Body of Mrs
wife of Mr John Sears Jun'r
of Chatham who Departed this
Life Nov'r the 1st
In the 23d Year
of her Age
& her Babe 10 Days old

This is a special gravestone. The tympanum displays a wingless skull in profile, large hourglass, scythe, pick and shovel. Note the large gouged eye sockets and the large teeth. A large crack is carved in the skull. See Rebecca Howes (d1765) for another dramatic skull without wings. The Chatham Historical Society has received expert opinion that the Sears and Howes gravestones are carved in the style of Robert Fowle of Boston.
